Hormones, Enzymes And More

Learn how healthy oils and combinations can benefit hormones and health. This week’s curated videos offer a plethora of useful information about hormones and specifically about how insulin can affect other hormones leading to numerous hormonal imbalances that can affect daily function, fertility, hair loss, moods and much more.

Garibaldi Biscuits

Have you ever had the experience of not realizing you were missing something until someone mentions it? Then, suddenly you are craving a taste of that distant memory.

That’s what happened to me with Sunshine raisin biscuits. I was reading the King Arthur baking blog, when I came across a recipe for these cookies.

My taste buds were flooded with memories of a childhood favorite that I hadn’t tasted for a very long time.

Very low sugar. You can substitute raisins with another dried fruit.

Helpful advice regarding hormones, blood flow and hair loss.

Helpful advice regarding hormones. Fasting is beneficial but can be over used. The truth is that no fast ever went on for the entire year in either animals or early humans and that seasonal duration is about 3-4 months before negative consequence occurs.

Remember, no more than 6 teaspoons (25 grams) of added sugar per day for women and 9 teaspoons (38 grams) for men. The AHA limits for children vary depending on their age and caloric needs, but range between 3-6 teaspoons (12 – 25 grams) per day. Children under two should have zero grams of sugar per day.

Cellular resistance can be protective but it is also indicator of specific conditions. Substrates control many functions of cellular response including hormonal cellular response and bio synthesis.

Hormones, Beneficial Oils And Resistance

Although the major function of Vitamin D Binding Protein (VDP) is binding, solubilization and transport of vitamin D and its metabolites, the name of this glycoprotein hides numerous other important biological functions.

Vitamin D resistance also correlates with high circulating levels of other steroid hormones including glucocorticoid.

Resistance is not an issue as long as there is adequate substrate available for accelerated steroid/sterol hormone synthesis.

Most of the fatty acids bound to human and bovine DBP are monounsaturated and saturated, mainly oleic and palmitic acids, which together account for 50% of the total of fatty acids in both species. By contrast, polyunsaturated fatty acids represented a minor component, less than 5%.

Vitamin D is not a hormone but a hormone precursor.

The only safe and effective bio active form of Vitamin D in a supplement is cod liver oil or other fatty fish.

Cod liver oil if given in the first year of life has been shown in some studies to prevent Diabetes Type I. Cod liver oil when given to pregnant women increased IQ levels in children and this effect was not seen when the women were given corn oil. In addition cod liver oil has been shown to benefit RA and greatly reduces inflammation in other arthritic conditions if taken for at least 4 months.

The benefits of oils like olive oil which are less prone to oxidation and quickly used for energy are well known to treat various conditions.

Fish oils despite their benefits are prone to quickly becoming rancid. All lipids containing unsaturated fatty acids oxidize over time, whether in cooking oils or fish oil capsules, and this can ultimately lead to the oil becoming rancid. Oxidation occurs when unsaturated fats—such as the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA—are exposed to heat, light, or oxygen. Polyunsaturated fats are more prone to oxidative damage than monounsaturated fats. EPA and DHA, are especially prone to oxidation and require special handling to prevent off‐flavors from developing.

In very recent studies researchers have been combining fish oils with anti oxidants to improve their effects. The study results are proving to have remarkably similar effects in reversing insulin resistance across the board in women, men, children and differing age groups and ethnic groups but also among those with serious conditions like heart disease, liver failure, PCOS, obesity and Parkinson’s disease.

In very recent studies researchers have been combining fish oils with anti oxidants like Vitamin E to improve their effects.

Insulin is a hormone but not a steroid hormone. Steroid hormones exert their action by entering the nucleus of a cell and altering gene expression.

Insulin, together with its principal counter-regulatory hormone glucagon, regulates blood glucose concentrations. It is considered to be the main anabolic hormone of the body. It regulates the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and protein by promoting the absorption of glucose from the blood into liver, fat and skeletal muscle cells. In these tissues the absorbed glucose is converted into either glycogen via glycogenesis or fats (triglycerides) via lipogenesis, or, in the case of the liver, into both.

Omega 3 fish oils are well known for their ability to fight inflammation and the benefits of cod liver oil have been known for centuries but now researchers have combined Omega 3 fish oils with antioxidant Vitamin E and the effects are remarkably consistent for not only the parameters in the conditions studied such as fighting inflammation or lowering cholesterol but in reversing insulin resistance and in the case of PCOS lowering both total and free testosterone in women, showing that the combination does affect steroid hormones.

Similar studies were carried out across different age groups, ethnic groups, choosing exclusively either men or women and amazingly the results were the same across the board in reversing insulin resistance. Insulin resistance was also reversed no matter the initial condition of the study participants from atherosclerosis to Parkinson’s.

Fish oils have clinically proven effects for cancer prevention and treatment in numerous cancers, including colon, pancreatic, breast and lung cancer. Fish oils can alter HLA-DR gene expression and are highly anti inflammatory.

This affect was noted across many groups and among both male and female patients, including menopausal, overweight, atherosclerotic and in those suffering with chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s and PCOS. Interestingly, testosterone and free testosterone was markedly reduced in women with PCOS.

Flax oil Omega 3’s did not produce the same effects in PCOS women.

Marine-derived Omega 3 PUFAs have greater potency versus plant-based Omega 3 PUFAs.

Try wheat germ oil. Among its most notable naturally occurring bioactive nutrients are vitamin E and the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

Salmon Oil

Despite the myriads of studies outlining the benefits of Omega 3’s supplementation, studies on children are not well known. Studies have shown that even without dietary intervention, supplementation with salmon oil omega 3’s significantly reduces obesity and insulin resistance in obese children.

Marine-derived Omega 3 PUFAs have greater potency versus plant-based Omega 3 PUFAs.

Thousands of studies have confirmed the benefits of healthy oils like olive oil, cod liver oil and other fi sh oils like salmon oil. While studies may seem contradictory, current research is focused on improving our understanding on the combined effects of fats and other foods including saturated fats, plant based omega 3’s, soy, trans fats and various other fat and food based combinations such as the effects of fats and fructose .

July 1 commentary

Fasting is beneficial but can be over used. The truth is that no fast ever went on for the entire year in either animals or early humans and that seasonal duration is about 3-4 months before negative consequence occurs. The daily fast is helpful with the duration determined by you as digestion will not begin until eating stops.

You know how it kills me to share most celebrity doctors but in this instance I am going out on a limb and sharing the second and third videos due to their hormonal advice because the truth is that insulin affects more than one hormone, therefore insulin resistance affects hormonal states and that can play a huge role in major  syndromes like PCOS and minor ones like hair loss.

Desiring a constant state of ketosis can have a negative impact, it is not sustained and was not a desired state for early humans but as with the first video we can learn much from animals during periods of abundance vs. starvation, seasonal affects and hibernation, night vs. day and learning about our own metabolism and reactions to help us achieve our own desired level of fitness and health. The first video is excellent for outlining how far the research has come regarding specific pathways and enzymes and it is very new.

You can do one fast or a few short periodic fasts to reset your metabolism and get it functioning again if your metabolism is not changing or fluctuating too much. This how long can you go with fasting or how low can you go with AIC is cultish and there is no indication in any literature that a desired A1C is below 5. Carb metabolism can be and is affected by fiber therefore extremely low carb diets are also not necessary long term. If you want to know individually how food and all of these other factors affect you a CGM may be a good idea so you can tailor your own lifestyle choices. Just checking your blood sugar for a few weeks or months after meals is also helpful.

Changing your entire metabolic profile can happen immediately with beneficial oils therefore substrates and co factors are extremely important.
